Visiting our primary school project in April filled us with positive energy and further motivation to continue our work in Cambodia. It was such a joy to meet the happy children, teachers, headmaster and the commune leader. The community is very grateful for our support and come across as being highly motivated and committed to follow up and contribute in our joint effort.
Save the Children Cambodia have also recently visited the school, and the conclusion from their evaluation is that this is a unique project! They are impressed with how well the teachers, school director and local community are integrated in the project, and not least, the level of local ownership.
We are proud to be able to share some highlights from the report by Save the Children:
Norway House has supported the school over the last 2 years, with Childs Right Foundation (CRF) as implementation partner. Budget and technical support have been provided to a number of projects, in close collaboration with the local community.
There are currently 580 children enrolled in the school, from kindergarten to grade 6. The school consists of 3 buildings with 15 classrooms. The environment is warm and friendly and the children look happy to be attending school. The teachers seem pleased with their work environment. A new teacher has recently been hired; a good sign, as attracting teachers in rural Cambodia can be a problem.
A number of educational projects have also been identified and implemented to increase capacity of the children, teachers, headmaster, parents and other community stakeholders.
Mr. Tes Sokchan, School Master, highlights how school structure has been strengthened.
CRF invited expert teachers from the MoEYS to train and improve the school system based on child friendly policies. A number of council groups have been established, supporting the identified areas of the school development:

Mr. Mey Savath, Chef of Education Department of Kandal province. Savath said “We participated to create the children councils in school, as well as to create the child club in communities. MoEYS approved to provide two teachers to work in school’s library. In the library, one of the teachers works in the morning and one of them works in the afternoon. Therefore our library keeps open in the whole day. “
Mr. Chhim Morn, Commune Leader. Morn tells how his community got involved in early stage to establish the school plan. As part of this the communities agreed to share 5 USD per month for water and electricity cost. Additionally community contributed 100USD to build the garden of school. The communities also participated in creating the child clubs, whose role is to follow up and educate communities about the children’s education situation.
Ms. Long Mary, Commune Council member, is actively involved in supporting the out of school youths as well as in improving the economic situation of the people in commune. She says “we collaborated with school and MoEYS to provide small business training to trainee whose age from 16-40 years old. Our commune leader is the chef of these small business projects. We use the rooms in this school to conduct small income generation training of hair dressing, makeup and cloth preparing for the wedding”.
Mr. Soun Rathana, teacher, responded to the question of what would make the school and community committed to achieve their development goal? “With the support from CRF we learn about the need of children. We follow the set up structures to manage project activities among partners. In school there is the children council; Children councils are playing their role to strengthen the school system and other activities such as, school maintenance, hygiene, doing peer education in encourage their friends to visit the library and giving feedback to teaching activities of the teachers. “
Thanks to the support of CRF and the local community, it seems we are well underway towards our goal of improving the quality of education, by promoting a safe, healthy and children friendly learning environment.

“Hello, how are you? I have been promoted to Supervisor at my company”.
We are happy to receive a mail with the good news from Chanrun, one of our students who graduated with a technical degree a couple of years ago.
Chanrun shares his story: “Thanks to Norway House I was able to study 2 years of technical training at Don Bosco. After graduating, I got a job with KDN company and my position was technician. I used to work outside, but on 2nd February 2015 I become a supervisor of TNC (testing and commissioning), and now I work in an office.
My family was very poor. Most of the children cannot study in my village. I think I am a curious boy, because I really want to study. I am the youngest in my family; I have two elder sisters and one elder brother. My sister and brother do not study because my family had no money. They work as farmers. When I saw my brother and sister cannot study I was very sad, because I want to study.
Now I am proud of myself and very happy with my new position as supervisor of team TNC. With the support of Norway House, I am also able to continue my studies at Western University part time. My major is English, and this year I am in year 2.
I am very thankful to Norway House and all the support you give to me and the other kids. I love all of you very much.”
Tusen takk for donasjon av fotball utstyr til skolen vi støtterl! Utstyret ble donert av Nyttårs Cup 2015, i regi av fotball gruppen til Lindås idrettslag. Takk også til Bring som fraktet utstyret gratis fra Lindås til Oslo.
Utstyret er tatt i bruk og blir administrert av studentforeningen. Det vil bli brukt i sports konkurranser med andre skoler. Rektor, lærere og studenter er veldig takknemlig for donasjonene og ønsker at vi overbringer en stor takk!

"Hi, I'm Din. I used to be a Norway House student. Thanks to your support, I graduated with a degree in accounting after 4 years of study. Now I am working at Child Rights Foundation as an accountant full time. I also continue my studies in English. Please read my letter of thanks."
We are very proud of all our students, who despite difficult circumstances, work hard to reach their goals. Their accomplishment are therefore even more impressive!
Norway House this year supports 13 students with scholarships, school supplies, housing, bikes and food money. They study law, international relations, economics, english, it, tourism, electrity, hair dressing and nail design. Here we are meeting with them and some of the older students, who have already graduated.
Rey Ou was selected to our student sponsoring program in 2013. He had then finished his first year of a 4 year bachelor program at Pannasastra University, majoring in International Relations, but did not have sufficient funds to continue his studies. Norway House awarded Rey a scholarship, which gave him the opportunity to continue his education and get the support he needed. He has just started his third year of studies and continues to do well. Rey's dream is to be able to go abroad to complete a Masters Degree, and to work as a professor or a diplomat. He lives in the student house funded by Norway House, and has proven to be a very valuable addition to the group. Read his story below:
There are seven members in my family. I am the sixth of the members. My family is a big family all of my members in the family they just only got education in the primary school because of the condition of the family. Only me in my family that I have a chance to study in university,
My majoring is International Relations. This may sound so difficult for us to study because it broad subjects many subjects that we need to study and reads to gain our knowledge and understand about this major. I am one of the student from Pannasastra University of Cambodia. Now I am year III term II in this majoring and in summer term. Because I really love this majoring and this is my dreaming majoring since I was a child. Base on my IR majoring I want to be a diplomat and professor in university and my big dreaming in my future is I want to get the master degree to study in abroad.
My English study
I am a countryside person. So it hard for me to study English and study any other language because it located in rural area, also we are in poor family so we cannot spend on the English as a course by course. Fortunately for me I have a chance to study in one organization that so far from me it may 10km from my house. Every day after I leave from study I always go to study English as a part time start from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. It really difficult for me because it far and when we leave class it a dark our home is far and I drive by my bike cycle. In rural areas it has no electricity stand on the road. But only thing that I can do to take me from school to my house is that when I saw I car or motor bike, I always drive so fast as them because they have light to see the road so I must try hard to take faster as them. This is my study life when I was in hometown. I try to improve my English by listening to radio, television, and practice with my friends everyday now I can use my English as a Khmer language I really happy because I can do it.. Event I am a poor peron but I have my chance to study in university and study as all of the students form any kind mix together. I really thank for Norway house that supported me if have no Norway House I may have no today as my university life thankful for Norway House. I promise I will achieve my goal for myself, my family also for Norway House.
Beside studying with my university life I try my best to study in debating team to gain my knowledge in public speaking and also in discussion as a formal. I take my free time at the weekend every Sunday morning start from 8:00AM to 11:00 AM. This help me a lot especially on how to speak and the way to speak in front of many people. I know how to stress our voice up and down and I have a chance to practice my studying with my friend and also in my class when I studying. Base on this study I can apply it when I have presentation and also discussion in class it make me more confident and brave enough to talk and express my ideas.
My free time from studying
Football is my favorite sport. I really like it I always play every weekend in the evening. I help with our health and make our physical more stronger. Especially, when we play sport it can make friendship and change our experience together. I am also one of the player with my team that compete in university league to win the trophy.
We are pleased to share photos from the new Library at the primary school. The library is being built in collaboration with Room to Read, the worlds largest publisher of local language books, and experts in building and running effective libraries in the developing world. In addition to supplying books, Room to Read conduct training on Library Management and other related subjects for the staff, to ensure smooth operations. The Librarian is currently working on book management (code and inventory marking) and plan is that the library will be completed during October and in time for school start 1st of November 2014.
