Visiting our Primary School project in April filled us with positive energy and further motivation to continue our work in Cambodia. It was such a joy to meet the happy children, teachers, headmaster and the commune leader. The community is very grateful for our support and come across as being highly motivated and committed to follow up and contribute in our joint effort. Save the Children Cambodia recently visited the school, and the conclusion from their evaluation is that this is a unique project! Read an excerpt of their report in the latest update here.

Primary School Project

In cooperation with our close partner, Child Rights Foundation (CRF), Norway House supports a pilot project on a local, state-run primary school in the Kandal province.  Direct beneficiaries of the project are 580 primary school students and 12 teachers. The school project was initiated in August 2013 and was run as a pilot project over a 3-year-period. Our goal is to copy the concept at several primary schools in the province and help raise the level of primary schools in general.

The objective of the project is to create a friendly, healthy and safe learning environment, contributing to the children's accomplishment of basic education as stipulated in Child Friendly School Policy of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. Expected results:
  • Capacity building for teachers in order to promote a child friendly learning and teaching environment.
  • Providing School Children with Health Education, Child Rights and Child Protection.
  • Promoting Primary Health Care:
  • Provide necessary facilities and daily practices for promoting school hygiene and sanitation as well as child friendly learning environments.
  • Check health status of educational staff and children as preventive measures to avoid diseases.
  • Provide first aid kits, worm pills, vaccination (iodine, iron, Vitamin A) and emergency intervention in the case of disease out-breaks.
  • Providing Direct Support to Vulnerable Students:
  • Vulnerable children will receive direct support from the project in order to be able to continue schooling and prevent them from being abused and exploited.
  • Ensure long-term sustainable project through involvement of local families and communities.
Read our Updates and Evaluation below to see how we are well underway towards our goal of improving the quality of education, by promoting a safe, healthy and children friendly learning environment.  We are deeply grateful for your support that allows us to continue this work! We firmly believe in giving a 'Handshake not Handout' - empowering people to solve their own problems, rather than doing it for them or subsidizing them financially.
